Inventors and Patents From the City of Tallahassee

Did you know that Tallahassee ranks among the top 100 universities in the country in new patents? If so, you’re not alone. There are many groups of inventors across the country who meet regularly and have their own websites. However, be aware that these websites are not associated with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. You should check with each group to ensure the information is accurate.

Inventor

Florida is home to several prominent inventors. Thomas Lipo, a research professor at the Florida State University Center for Advanced Power Systems, is one of those. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and the NAE, and he holds 45 U.S. patents.

Inventors and patents in Tallahassee are a part of the city’s economic development. This initiative is designed to attract new businesses to the city. Moreover, it is aimed at creating a stronger entrepreneurial ecosystem. Tallahassee has an entrepreneurial development fund that supports entrepreneurs. It is also aiming to become the first gigabit city in the state.

In 2012, the University of South Florida was ranked No. 55 in the list of universities with the highest number of patents. Using data from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the university had an institutional record of 123 patents by the end of 2020. It ranked eighth among American public research universities and 15th out of more than a thousand universities worldwide.

Patents are valuable tools for entrepreneurs. A patent can prevent others from copying or using your invention without your permission. It can also give you the rights to sell or buy your intellectual property, and it helps fuel the American economy. The patent system has been a major source of innovation in our country for decades. Today, it is the foundation of public/private partnerships. By fostering innovation, we can ensure America’s economic future for future generations.

Types of patents

Patents are a great way to protect your inventions. There are three different types of patents, each covering a specific type of discovery or invention. Utility patents cover useful processes and machines, and design patents cover decorative items. Design patents protect ornamental features of an item, but do not protect the structure.

Utility patents are the most common type of patent. These protect new and useful processes or machines, as well as improvement on an existing product. They also cover compositions of matter, which include new chemical compounds or mixtures. Machines and manufactures are also covered.

A utility patent can be granted to anyone who invents a new and useful product. The term of a utility patent is 20 years. This type of patent is often used for new ideas that are still in the prototype stage. A design patent, on the other hand, lasts 14 years and is awarded for a specific ornament. You can read more about design patents by visiting this website.

Tallahassee’s ranking among top 100 universities for new patents

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s annual report on universities’ new patent activity reveals that Florida universities are among the best in the nation. In 2018, USF received 96 new patents in an array of technologies. These include clean energy solutions, sustainable water technologies, and nanoscale particles that improve drug delivery. The total number of USF patents was higher than all other universities in North Carolina’s Research Triangle region.

Florida State University is among the top 50 universities in the nation for producing patented technologies, according to the National Academy of Inventors and the Intellectual Property Owners Association. The university was ranked No. 43 for producing patents in 2019, up 26 spots from last year’s ranking. In 2016, the university produced 48 patented technologies.

The University of Florida ranked eighth among public research universities for new patents, and University of South Florida came in 15th place. Florida’s research universities are also making an impact on the global economy, according to the National Academy of Inventors. The universities in Tallahassee were cited as “innovative” in the report.
